Day 2 – Tbilisi and Mtskheta

  • On this day, you’ll visit two capitals of Georgia: the ancient one and the modern one. Mtskheta is the former capital city of Georgia. It’s also called Second Jerusalem because of the many Christian relics preserved in the city, including Jesus Christ's tunic. The first stop is Jvari monastery (VI c.), proudly standing on the mountain, overlooking the city and its environs. Another stop will be Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (XI c.), which is significant for many things. Most importantly, Christ’s tunic is buried under the cathedral. It is also the burial place of Georgian kings, and Saint Andrew's holy parts are preserved there.
  • The day continues in Tbilisi with a nice evening walk in the old streets of the modern capital. We’ll start the tour atMetekhi Cathedral (XIII c.) and the Isani neighbourhood, which was a royal residence in the Middle Ages. It’s a perfect place to enjoy magnificent views of the old city. Then we’ll take a cable car to the mother fortress of Tbilisi, Narikala (VI c.), one of the first constructions in the city. From Narikala Fortress, you can see the whole city. After we’ll take a walk down to see the Sulphur Bath district and unique mosque, where Shia and Sunni Muslims pray together, we'll slowly move on towards the Shardeni and other small, cozy streets of the old city. On the way, we’ll see Sioni Cathedral (XI c.), Anchiskhati Basilica (VI c.), Gabriadze puppet theater, etc. Later, take a walk on the most central square of the city – Freedom square and see the monument of Saint George.  Rustaveli Avenue with its XIX c. buildings, museums, parliament, cozy cafes where we will have a beautiful reception with wine and Georgian hospitality will be next on our list.

Day 3 – The Georgian Military Highway and Kazbegi

  • The Georgian Military Highway will take you towards the Caucasus Mountains. The first stop is Ananuri fortress(XIV c.). It is built on the conjoining place of two mountain rivers, overlooking the emerald-colored, Jinvali water basin dipped into the mountains.
  • Lots of mysterious legends about those towers are still preserved by our ancestors. The road will take you towards the mountains, and on the way to Kazbegi, you will stop in the ski resort of Gudauri, where one can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains or enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or paragliding (depending on the season). After Gudauri, continue to Stepantsminda. Overnight there.

Day 4 – Hiking to Gergeti Trinity Church and the glacier of Kazbegi

  • Your first major hike takes you to the famous Gergeti Trinity Church, perched high above the valley against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek. The trail winds through traditional mountain scenery, offering ever-expanding views of glaciers, rivers, and snow-capped peaks. Standing beside this iconic church, surrounded by some of the highest mountains in Georgia, is an unforgettable experience and one of the defining moments of any visit to the Caucasus.
  • On this day, we will stock up on sufficient provisions, because Gergeti Trinity is not the final point of our destination. On this day, we will hike to the Kazbegi Glacier. The Kazbegi Glacier is the highest peak of Eastern Georgia at 5,047 m, the Bride of the Valley, Urskhokh Mountain, as the local population used to call it. The final stop of this day, after a long hike, will be a mountain hotel called Altihut.

Day 5 – Hiking The mount Kazbegi

  • Experience one of the most impressive hikes in the Caucasus Mountains, leading from Altihut to the impressive glacier of Mount Kazbek. The hike starts from Altihut, from where beautiful views open up of Mount Kazbek, the Gergeti Trinity Church, and the surrounding mountain valleys. From here, the trail gradually climbs onto challenging alpine terrain and follows paths deep into the Kazbegi National Park. The higher you continue, the harsher and rockier the landscapes become. Snow-covered peaks, glacial rivers, rocky ridges, and vast open landscapes create an unforgettable experience. Mount Kazbek — the third-highest mountain in Georgia and one of the most recognizable symbols of the entire Caucasus.
  • The trail eventually brings you to the glacier of Mount Kazbek — an outstanding natural wonder. Surrounded by high cliffs and high-mountain wilderness, the glacier gives you a unique opportunity to experience up close the untouched beauty of Georgia’s mountain environment. Rest, take photographs, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote alpine setting.
  • Begin the return journey toward Altihut. During the descent, new views of the Gergeti Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges unfold, making the way back just as impressive as the ascent.

Day 10 – Hiking in David Gareja

  • Today is devoted entirely to hiking in the David Gareja desert. Early in the morning, from the village of Udabno, we will follow picturesque trails that run between dry hills and impressive rock formations toward the David Gareja Monastery Complex, located near the border with Azerbaijan.
  • The David Gareja Monastery Complex was founded in the 6th century by Saint David Garejeli, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. For centuries, it was one of Georgia’s most important religious, cultural, and educational centers. The rock-hewn monasteries, monks’ cells, and unique frescoes still reflect Georgia’s rich Christian heritage.
  • In addition to its cultural significance, the semi-desert of David Gareja is one of Georgia’s most important areas for birdwatching. Species that live here or pass through during migration include the Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Booted Eagle, various species of hawks, and the Black Stork.

  • For centuries, the Shiraki Plain served as grazing land for livestock, while during the Soviet period it acquired a military function. This territory is part of the Iori Plateau and represents the driest region of Georgia. It is here that the landscape transitions from the agricultural zones of Kakheti to the semi-deserts and canyon landscapes of Vashlovani.
  • We will visit an abandoned Soviet-era military airfield, where empty runways, abandoned buildings, and rusting aircraft remind us of the reality of time’s passage.
  • Afterward, we will visit the main destination of the day — the protected area of Vashlovani. It was established in 1935 and today protects one of Georgia’s most unique ecosystems.
  • Millions of years ago, this territory was the floor of an ancient sea, which is why fossils of shells and marine organisms can still be found here today. Vashlovani is famous for its sandstone cliffs, canyons, and the so-called “Sharp Cliffs.”
  • Wildlife found here includes wolves, golden jackals, foxes, lynxes, badgers, hedgehogs, and gazelles, which are a rare species in Georgia. Among the birds, particularly notable are the Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Snake Eagle, and various species of hawks.
  • Because of its unique geology and semi-desert nature, Vashlovani is often called the most non-Caucasian landscape in Georgia.
  • In the evening, we will return to Dedoplistskaro. We will stay in a family guesthouse, prepare dinner, and rest

Day 16 - Rabati Fortress, the Megaliths of Saro, and the Cave City of Vardzia

  • Early in the morning, we will set out to explore one of Georgia’s oldest regions — Javakheti. On this day, we will visit two very interesting historical sites.
  • The first is Rabati, a city-fortress dating back to the 15th century. During the 16th–17th centuries, Rabati served as the residence of Ottoman rulers and a center of slave trade. Here, you will be able to admire the beauty of marble-built and gold-decorated buildings. You can also see a mosque that served different religions throughout its history. At various times, it was transformed into a Russian Orthodox church, a fortress, and a meeting place for shahs.
  • Next, we will visit one of the most mysterious and lesser-known historical places — the village of Saro. This ancient village is unique because prehistoric, ancient, and medieval cultural layers can be found side by side, making Saro one of the most distinctive historical locations in southern Georgia.
  • We will begin our hike by visiting the Monastery of the Holy Archangels of Saro, dating from the 7th–9th centuries. The church is one of the best examples of how prehistoric and Christian heritage merge in Georgia. Today, nuns live in the monastery. They will host us with local sweets and tea.
  • Afterward, we will continue to the Saro Megalithic Fortress. According to archaeologists, the oldest parts of the complex date back to the 2nd–1st millennia BC, meaning these structures were built approximately 3,000–4,000 years ago. The fortress was constructed from enormous stone blocks using dry-stone masonry without mortar. The complex consists of three independent fortified sections and for centuries controlled important trade and military routes through the Mtkvari Valley.
  • Artifacts from the Early Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Middle Ages have been discovered within and around the fortress, confirming that people lived here continuously for several millennia.
  • In Saro, we will also see examples of traditional Meskhetian architecture — semi-underground dwellings, old halls, and the remains of the historic village that were part of local daily life for centuries.
  • During the hike, we will enjoy panoramic views of the Javakheti and Erusheti mountain ranges, after which we will continue to Vardzia — one of Georgia’s largest rock-cut monasteries and medieval cities. Vardzia is a city containing a church, refectory, residential caves, wine cellars, and much more. It is an extraordinary place for experiencing the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
  • Overnight in Vardzia.

Day 17 – Tmogvi Cliff Fortress and the Ancient Stronghold of Khertvisi

  • Today, we will travel to one of the most impressive historical monuments of the Mtkvari Valley — Tmogvi Fortress. Tmogvi Fortress has been known since the 9th–10th centuries and played an important role in protecting Georgia’s southern borders. From the fortress, built atop a cliff, trade and military routes passing through the Mtkvari Valley were controlled.
  • After visiting the fortress, we will continue to Khertvisi Fortress. Khertvisi is one of Georgia’s oldest fortresses, with a history beginning in the early Middle Ages. Due to its strategic location, it controlled routes linking Georgia with the South Caucasus and the Near East for centuries.
  • The fortress is especially impressive because of its location on a rocky promontory where the valleys of the Paravani and Mtkvari rivers meet.
  • Throughout the day, we will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of Samtskhe-Javakheti — a region that for centuries served as an important center of cultural, trade, and military connections between Georgia and neighboring states.
  • In the evening, we will return to Vardzia, where we will once again enjoy the unique nature and peaceful atmosphere of the Mtkvari Valley.
  • Overnight in Vardzia.

Day 18 – The Volcanic Plateau of Javakheti, Lake Paravani, and the Doukhobor Village of Gorelovka

  • Today, we will travel across the vast volcanic plateau of Javakheti — one of Georgia’s most remarkable natural regions, formed millions of years ago by powerful volcanic processes. This highland area is known for its endless meadows, alpine landscapes, and numerous lakes.
  • We will travel along the shores of Lake Paravani, the largest lake in Georgia. Located at an altitude of 2,073 meters above sea level, Paravani occupied an important place for centuries on historical trade and travel routes connecting the South Caucasus with Anatolia.
  • Ancient settlements and archaeological monuments discovered around the lake testify to the region’s long history.
  • Along the way, we will pass through traditional Javakhetian villages and become acquainted with the region’s diverse cultural heritage, including a visit to the Doukhobor village of Gorelovka.
  • Gorelovka is a unique village located on the volcanic plateau of Javakheti, founded in the mid-19th century by Russian Doukhobors. The Doukhobors were a Christian religious group that rejected military service, violence, and church hierarchy. The Russian Empire resettled them in the Caucasus, and during the 1840s they settled in Javakheti and founded several villages, including Gorelovka.
  • Here, it is possible to see traditional wooden houses, colorful windows, and distinctive architecture that is rarely found elsewhere in Georgia. For many decades, Gorelovka served as the cultural and spiritual center of the Doukhobor community.
  • Overnight in Ninotsminda or in a nearby family guesthouse.

Day 19 – Hidden Alpine Lakes of Javakheti & Wild Bird Kingdom

  • Today we will visit the protected areas of Javakheti — one of Georgia’s most important natural and historical regions. This high mountain volcanic plateau is located at 1,800–2,300 meters above sea level and was formed by volcanic processes that occurred millions of years ago.
  • We will visit Madatapa and Bughdasheni Lakes, which are internationally significant wetland areas. The lakes lie on an important bird migration route, and more than 140 species of birds are regularly recorded here. The region is known for rare bird species, including the Armenian gull, cranes, and various water birds.
  • Overnight in Ninotsminda.

Day 20 – From Volcanic Canyons to German Heritage Villages

  • Today we begin our return to Tbilisi, and along the way we will visit Dashbashi Canyon, formed by the Khrami River. In some sections, the canyon reaches depths of 200 meters, and its basalt cliffs are the result of volcanic activity millions of years ago.
  • Inside the canyon there are several waterfalls and a unique microclimate that is significantly different from the surrounding plateau.
  • After visiting the canyon, we will take a walk in Asureti, a beautiful small village known for its fascinating architecture. Here you will find a 19th-century church, a German Lutheran church, and houses and streets typical of German settlements.
  • This village has a very interesting history — it was founded in 1818 by German settlers who fled religious persecution from Württemberg to the Russian Empire at that time.
  • Here, you will also have time to taste local dishes and try locally produced beer.
  • In the evening, we will enjoy the views of the Algeti Reservoir and return to Tbilisi.
  • Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 22 - Departure

  • Transfer to the airport and departure.
    End of the tour.
